Chapter 13

The Boss didn't roar. It vented.

HISS.

Steam blasted from the cooling towers on the Magma Titan’s back as it rose from the lake of molten steel. It was thirty feet of animated iron and hate, its chest cavity glowing with the intensity of a dying sun.

[BOSS: MAGMA TITAN (RANK A)] [STATUS: OVERHEATING]

Ren stood on the rusted catwalk overlooking the arena. The heat was scorching, curling the edges of her leather trench coat, but she didn't flinch. She didn't have to.

For the first time, she wasn't on the front line bleeding. She was conducting.

"Kane! Catch the hammer!" Ren shouted.

The Titan swung a fist the size of a compact car.

"I CATCH!" Kane roared.

The werewolf, buffed by his own adrenaline and Vesper’s support, caught the fist. The impact buckled the floor plates. His arms strained, muscles bulging like steel cables.

[HP: 60%]

Normally, Ren would feel that impact. She would be doubling over, coughing blood to feed the bond.

Instead, Vesper stepped out from behind a pillar.

The Saint raised her chained hands. Black energy lashed out, connecting to Kane’s back.

"Give it here," Vesper snarled.

[SKILL: PAIN SIPHON.]

Kane’s health bar snapped back to 100%. Vesper grunted, staggering as a massive bruise bloomed on her shoulder, only to fade seconds later as she grounded the energy into the floor.

"Julian! Cool him off!" Ren ordered.

"With pleasure," Julian glided over the lava, his suit protected by a shimmering blood-shield. "I prefer my drinks chilled."

He cast [Blood Rime]. A wave of freezing crimson mist hit the Titan’s chest. The molten iron turned grey and brittle.

CRACK.

"Xerxes! The heart!"

Xerxes hovered at eye level with the giant. "Target lock acquired."

ZAP.

A precise railgun shot punched through the brittle armor.

The Titan shuddered. The light in its eyes flickered. It reached out one last time, trying to grab Xerxes.

"Sit. Down," Ren said quietly.

Kane swept the Titan’s legs.

CRASH.

The construct fell. It hit the lava with a splash that sent waves of fire washing over the platform. It groaned—the sound of twisting metal—and then went dark.

Silence returned to the Foundry, save for the bubbling of the molten steel.

Ren checked her status.

[HP: 100/100] [MANA: 95/100]

She looked at her hands. No blood. No shakes.

"Is this..." Ren whispered to herself. "...what it feels like to be competent?"

"Loot!" Kane shouted.

He jumped onto the cooling corpse of the Titan, ignoring the steam sizzling against his bare feet. He started ripping plating off the chest cavity.

"Careful, you oaf!" Julian hovered nearby, using a handkerchief to cover his nose. "We are looking for refined mana-crystals, not scrap metal."

"Sparky wants the metal," Ren called out, climbing down the ladder. "Strip it all. If it shines, we take it."

"I am not carrying garbage," Julian sniffed. He picked up a small, perfectly cut ruby from the debris with two fingers. "I shall carry this. It matches my tie."

"Xerxes," Ren said. "Scan the core."

The Gorgon landed on the Titan’s chest. He interfaced with the wreckage.

"Energy signature detected," Xerxes droned. "Massive. High density. It is located beneath the primary heat shield."

Kane ripped the heat shield off like it was the lid of a tuna can.
